Unilever Senior Scientist, Consumer Technical Insights in Trumbull, Connecticut

Background & Purpose of the Job

This position is within the Consumer Technical Insights Skin Cleansing team based in Trumbull, with consumer and claims responsibility for the Male Skin Cleansing program (likely Axe). The position will be responsible for both the consumer testing program and substantiation/defense of big impact, consumer relevant product claims by interacting in a multi-disciplinary business environment, providing a critical link between the Global R&D, Legal, Brand Development and Regional CTI/Claims teams. The candidate will preferably have product research, statistics, sensory, or claims substantiation experience.

Who You Are & What You’ll Do

Work closely with Brand and development team to define / develop the consumer testing program, claims template, brief and work plan. Employ a sound understanding of the category, brands, competitive environment and technology to develop robust consumer testing strategies, to support product claims, and defend or attack product claims by challenge. Understand and be able to interpret Unilever technology and translate this to consumer relevant claims / concept ideas. Lead project claims function within global project networks.

  • Effectively execute qualitative, quantitative, and sensory research in order to uncover consumer preferences and understanding. Alternatively, brief and partner with external agencies/supplier to achieve the same objective.

  • Apply new methods, advanced sensory methods, and/or using novel statistical approaches to draw out relevant insights and trends

  • Identify insights that will drive new product & pack opportunities for global projects, based on analysis of trends, consumer needs, and new technology impact on consumers (partnering with CMI where relevant).

  • Lead elements of Global Skin CTI strategic understanding plan.

  • Work with line manager to develop the consumer testing, claims support strategy, and claims support dossiers for innovation projects

  • Actively participate and sometimes lead the Concept/ Claims co-generation process

  • Plan technical, clinical and consumer testing to generate relevant support data

  • Co-lead Claims Demo/ Workshops

  • Lead the cross-functional discussions on claims modification (with Brand, Regulatory/Legal, Regional teams)

  • Lead the transfer work of front and back of pack claims/ TV claims support to the Regional teams from line manager

  • Interface with the Claims Network to capture regional needs to guarantee that they are reflected on the global claims requirements and consumer testing plans.

  • Deliver outstanding communications for our innovations that are robustly supported in technical and consumer understanding.

What You’ll Need To Succeed

  • M.Sc. or B.S. in Sensory, Mathematics, Psychology, or related sciences

  • Experience in Personal Care or CPG industry preferred.

  • Working knowledge of claims development and consumer research are a plus, as well as project and time management skills to coordinate multiple work streams and timelines for innovation projects.

  • Proficient in Microsoft office suite (Excel, Word, Power point) and statistical analyses

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.

  • Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships
