Background & Purpose of the Job
This position is within the Advanced Care Bars & Liquids Skin Cleansing R&D Global Design team based in Trumbull, with Formulation and Processing responsibility for the Advanced Care Bars program. The candidate will be responsible for development related to the design of new category technologies for Bars & Liquids and integrating these formats into the skin cleansing innovation pipeline. The position will have formulation and processing responsibility for syndet bars technology and development of syndet bars expertise in R&D. The position will help partner with the Skin Cleansing business to develop category design technology for advance syndet bars & liquids technology. The candidate must have a fundamental understanding of formulation and processing principles and have a “hands-on” approach to laboratory, pilot and factory scale-up activities; will also need to be able to translate product benefits into consumer relevant visualizations and demonstrations. The candidate will preferably have product and process expertise in acyl isethionate technology as well as demonstrable capability in leading the scientific agenda. The individual needs to be able to work in a safe, disciplined manner. The position requires strong communication and team skills. Who You Are & What You’ll Do
Partner with chemists and engineers in a hybrid role to develop technical elements of the Advanced Care Bars technical program with responsibility for future Dove and syndet bars formulation and processing technology. Accountable for product stability, safety and performance testing, processing, specifications, patents, etc.
Possess a growth mindset and a passion for Dove bars; will be responsible for developing technical expertise in acyl isethionate chemistry, reaction kinetics and processing design while working with internal global experts to drive the future development of DEFI Bar technology.
Plans, implements and evaluates research plan following Unilever global guidelines and within project budget against technical briefs and be responsible for ensuring specifications of formulation, process, pack and quality assurance are correct and delivered against project timings.
Use model-based design of processes; applying principles of process chemistry, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics to new formulations to create an understanding of process effects on product performance.
Drive productive working relationships with a range of internal and external development partners, including Brand Teams, Supply Chain, 3P manufacturers, Suppliers, University collaborations, etc.
With minimum supervisory input, must demonstrate the ability to present information to both technical and non-technical audiences. Responsible for managing relationships with factories, suppliers and internal/external partners for stakeholder management regarding technical issues/status.
Capability and comfort working across laboratory, pilot plant and factory settings for the end-to-end accountability of the development and scale-up of DEFI bars technology. Will perform general Pilot Plant duties: Equipment set, batching, filling, clean-up and equipment maintenance and produce product for consumer and clinical testing, and for stability studies.

What You’ll Need To Succeed
- M.Sc. or B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or related sciences
- Experience in Personal Care or CPG industry preferred.
- Working knowledge of ingredients, formulation, process and product Design principles as well as project and time management skills to coordinate multiple work streams and timelines for innovation projects.
- Experience and passion for problem-solving (both in the lab and in the pilot plant) in a fast-paced environment with a desire to innovate.
- Proficient in Microsoft office suite (Excel, Word, Power point) and statistical analysis
- Excellent communication and presentation skills. Working knowledge of root cause analysis, problem solving techniques and application to existing and new products.
- Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships
