Background & Purpose of the Job

Unilever is a global leader in Personal Care driven by the innovations created and crafted by Beauty and Personal Care R&D. This position is within the Advanced Care Bars & Liquids Skin Cleansing R&D Global Design group based in Trumbull, with responsibility for the Advanced Care Liquids program, including line management and all technical project team responsibilities. The candidate will be responsible for leading the development of new category Design technologies for Advanced Liquids and integrating new technology into the skin cleansing innovation pipeline.The candidate will be responsible for a broad array of work/technology programs that pull together multi-functional resources in support of project delivery.This will involve working with internal R&D teams, Marketing, CTI/Claims, Procurement, Supply Chain, external suppliers, and local team counterparts. The position requires strong communication and team skills as well as the ability to influence and drive technical work towards key decision points with internal/external stakeholders. The candidate will have a scientific pioneer mindset that is able to bring deep technical expertise to life through application and lead internal/external technical partnerships for Unilever to leverage through Brand innovation. Who You Are & What You’ll Do

The Principal Scientist will report to the Global R&D Director for Baby & Advanced Care Bars & Liquids in the Trumbull Skin Cleansing R&D organization and will have multi-functional interfaces across the broader global Beauty and Personal Care R&D organization. The candidate will be a recognized science expert and demonstrate the ability to identify future opportunities based on knowledge of evolving external science. The individual must have a fundamental understanding of formulation and processing principles in order to develop new products and technologies for the Beauty and Personal Care business, as well as develop a technical R&D team for dynamic collaborative innovation. The candidate will preferably have product and process expertise in acyl isethionate (DEFI) technology as well as demonstrable capability to lead a scientific agenda into future technology white spaces. The individual needs to be able to work in a safe, disciplined manner across multiple workstreams. The Principal Scientist will lead and coordinate a team in the delivery of all technical elements of the Advanced Care Liquids program, including formulation, stability, safety and performance testing, processing, specifications, patents, etcas well as act as R&D partner to cross-functional teams in scoping and launching products.

The candidate will drive productive working relationships with a range of internal and external development partners, including Process Eng., Packaging, Consumer Technical Insight & Claims, Specifications, Safety, Brand Teams, Supply Chain, 3P manufacturers, RM Suppliers, University collaborations, etc.

The candidate will identify and develop new approaches and capabilities to support the Advanced Care program including initial focus on mild & gentle Baby Care and increasing Sustainability by Design; focus will be on accelerating and driving more impact from our efforts to design natural and environmentally sustainable products, including technologies such as biodegradable surfactants, natural-based polymers and preservation.

Responsible for risk management, claims and legal compliance and for intellectual property protection and patent, regulatory and SEAC clearance for internally sourced formulations.

The candidate will work in concert with Advanced Care team to scope, evaluate and manage relationships with external suppliers/partners in the creation of new business value; critical for success will be judgement and proper stakeholder management regarding technical issues/status.

What You’ll Need To Succeed

Ph.D. or M.Sc. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related sciences

10 years of experience in Personal Care and Product Formulation

Working knowledge of ingredients, formulation, process and product Design principles.

Proficient in Microsoft office suite (Excel, Word, Power point) and jmp analysis.

Must be able to work independently and in diverse cross-functional project team equally well and must be able to lead a technical team without always having direct supervision of that team. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are critical. Must have a passionate for the industry and the ability to influence and inspire others for maximum effectiveness. Project, people and time management skills are needed to coordinate multiple work streams and timelines for innovation projects with varying deadlines. Critical for success is for the individual to have an entrepreneurial and growth mindset to develop technology in the innovation white-spaces in order to create value for our brands and our business through new technology.
