About Health Metrics Sciences
The Department of Health Metrics Sciences (HMS) is an interdisciplinary research department that integrates the fields of biostatistics, epidemiology, and other disciplines. HMS offers a unique approach to population health by focusing on the comprehensive analysis of health issues and their drivers worldwide. Beyond academic research, we aim to influence health policy, catalyze change in health practices, and disseminate essential information to ameliorate health outcomes across the globe. HMS is dedicated to fostering the development of the next generation of scientists and leaders in health metrics through faculty mentorship, access to exceptional data and resources, and networking opportunities.

About the Role The Department of Health Metrics Sciences is seeking a dedicated Academic Programs Manager to join the administrative team. Founded in 2018, the department is at the forefront of training the next generation of data scientists to integrate health metrics with global health solutions. In this role, strong project management skills will be pivotal in facilitating smooth operations, fostering student success, and contributing to the department's mission of advancing health metrics science. This role reports to the Director of Academic Programs.

This position is contingent on project funding availability and has currently secured funding through at least the end of June 2026.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Academic program operations The Program Manager in HMS is pivotal in overseeing the operations of our academic programs. This role involves orchestrating activities, strategic planning, and event management, all aimed at enriching the education of our students. The Program Manager works closely with the Director of Academic Programs and others on the HMS administrative team and collaborates with partner programs and institutions at the university, including the Department of Global Health and IHME. Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing the planning and execution of academic events, contributing to a vibrant educational environment.

  • Acting as a liaison for data requests, program information, and the initiation of new projects, ensuring responsiveness and support across academic operations.

  • Engaging in curriculum development efforts and providing critical feedback from HMS students to enhance course offerings.

  • Supporting faculty advisors, facilitating annual feedback sessions for continuous improvement, and contributing to program reviews.

  • Drafting reports on program metrics, representing HMS in cross-departmental projects, and maintaining the HMS website and student databases.

  • Identifying funding opportunities for students, advising on scholarship applications, and managing student recruitment and funding tracks.

  • Cultivating an inclusive and supportive educational environment that embraces diversity and promotes the success of all students, ensuring equitable access to resources and opportunities.

  • Leveraging technology and innovative practices to enhance academic program operations, improve the learning experience, and streamline administrative processes, keeping HMS at the forefront of educational excellence.HMS student admissions and recruitment The Program Manager plays a critical role in facilitating the HMS admissions and recruitment efforts, ensuring a diverse and talented student body. This role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, from direct communication with prospective students to the orchestration of recruitment events and the management of the admissions process. Key responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing the admissions process including applicant tracking, organizing the faculty review, and the facilitating of review meetings.

  • Providing detailed responses to inquiries about HMS programs and the admissions process through various communication channels.

  • Coordinating with relevant stakeholders to manage admissions committees for different program tracks, facilitating the entire selection process including interviews to campus visits.

  • Establishing and maintaining FERPA-compliant application procedures, and training admissions committee members on these processes to uphold privacy standards.

  • Organizing and participating in recruitment events to showcase HMS programs, attending external events to enhance program visibility.

  • Implementing targeted outreach strategies to attract a diverse applicant pool, including efforts focused on underrepresented groups and international students.Academic advising The Program Manager is responsible for academic advising of current graduate students (approximately 30 students per year). At the University of Washington, this role is called the Graduate Program Advisor (GPA). Responsibilities range from the integration of academic policies and procedures to student guidance and advising that ensures timely graduation. Other key duties include:

  • Welcoming new students and continually aiding in navigating degree milestones, policy understanding, and meeting academic requirements.

  • Actively monitoring student progress, providing personalized advising on degree requirements, research objectives, faculty mentorship, funding opportunities, and course selection.

  • Developing and disseminating comprehensive guidelines and timelines to streamline student and faculty understanding of academic requirements.

  • Proactively identifying and addressing emerging academic issues, contributing to policy development and implementation.

  • Offering support and referrals to students facing academic challenges, enhancing their ability to succeed.

  • Facilitating connections between students and faculty advisors, ensuring productive academic mentoring relationships.

  • Communicating academic expectations and corrective actions through clear documentation when needed.

  • Overseeing the program’s Canvas page, serving as a central hub for academic advising and resource sharing.Fellowship and student services support This role is pivotal in driving innovation and supporting the development of inclusive educational programs. It is crucial in crafting fellowship programs and bolstering external training opportunities in health metrics, with the aim of broadening our reach and deepening our global impact. Key areas of focus include:

  • Collaborating with teams at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation to develop fellowship programs that align with our vision of extending educational opportunities on a global scale.

  • Assisting in the creation of new fellowship opportunities and overseeing the overall fellowship experience.

  • Assisting in the recruitment, hiring, and integrating of fellow program participants into the HMS and IHME community, ensuring a high-quality fellow experience.

  • Enhancing alumni engagement and leveraging these networks to provide support for current students and recent graduates.

  • Developing clear and effective communication channels between HMS administrators, faculty, students, alumni, and other stakeholders making use of existing platforms and generating new content to keep our community informed and engaged.

  • Taking an active role in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives within HMS and IHME, which are integral to curriculum planning and the cultivation of an inclusive learning environment.Other duties as assigned MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in administration, education, educational leadership and administration, or related field and three years’ experience in supporting graduate level academic programs.

  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated experience and competence in working with curricula and/or students at a college-level academic program, program leadership, business planning, and supervision of employees.

  • Must be able to assess strategic priorities, creatively identify solutions, and implement plans accordingly systematically and with strong attention to detail, focused on a positive end result

  • Experience with interpreting and/or developing university policies in admissions, advising, and program curriculum.

  • Adept diplomacy and exemplary interpersonal skills required. Must be agile at forming respectful and rewarding relationships with people with different levels of experience and expertise from a variety of cultural, linguistic, and professional settings.

  • Exceptional listening skills and ability to relate to, influence, and persuade to achieve departmental goals.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and collaborative environment while competently managing multiple priorities and/or having to pivot quickly with changing priorities to meet deadlines, all the while with a can-do attitude.

  • Ability to examine, evaluate, and redesign administrative operations and procedures.

  • Ability to maintain forward momentum and thrive in the unknown and ambiguous.

  • Deep desire to contribute to global health and research.
