Insight Global Control + Automation Engineer in San Diego, California

Job Description

A shipbuilding corporation in San Diego, CA is looking for a Control & Automation Engineer to join their team. Interface with suppliers of automation systems both hardware and software to ensure design meets standards and is correct for the application. Support all aspects of design development, analysis, testing, and system integration in the new vessel construction environment. Oversee the development and integration of next generation marine control and automation systems including propulsion control, dynamic positioning, power generation and management, and vessel auxiliary control systems. This position can expect to be involved in activities including: supporting test engineers troubleshooting in the field, attending sea trials, collecting data on performance, communicating with the Government customer and regulatory bodies, and working with a range of equipment suppliers. Prepare and maintain design studies, proposals, purchase specifications, engineering calculations, test memos, test reports, and pre-contract design packages.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

 · Communicate with sub-suppliers of centralized control and automation system for marine vessels; resolve technical issues with sub-suppliers.

 · Review and approve design of industrial automation systems and architectures as proposed by the sub-supplier.

 · Review and approve manufacturing and test schedules of equipment. Attend factory acceptance test for equipment.

 · Prepare purchase specifications and test memos. Ensure purchase specifications are compliant with ship specifications and regulatory body requirements.

 · Review and approve sub-supplier vendor furnished information (VFI).

 · Develop block wiring diagrams and schematics for communication systems to connect field equipment with the automation systems.

 · Manage internal controlled documentation such as input/output database.

 · Ensure computer signals are communicating, alarms are properly going off.

 · Assess customer and regulatory requirements in order to develop and modify technical requirements of sub-supplier purchase specification or statements of work.

 · Perform design analysis and support calculations for engineering product development.

 · Assists in writing draft ship specifications and supports estimates for new contracts.

 · Prepare scope for change orders and Engineering estimates.

 · Represent company on official business including participating in presentations. Communicates effectively with internal and external customers, including Owners and Suppliers, in design related matters.

Skills and Requirements

· B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Controls and Automation, or technical degree.

 · 5+ years of related experience of automation engineering within a manufacturing setting.

 · Working knowledge of Industrial Controller (PLC) programming and Human Machine Interface (HMI) design, development and troubleshooting using Allen Bradley, Siemens, or related hardware and software.

 · Working knowledge AutoCAD Electrical.

· Working knowledge of industrial communication network architecture, firewall/router configuration. · Familiarity with shipboard equipment. U.S. Navy or commercial sailing experience.

 · Thorough experience with SCADA systems design, setup, and configuration as it relates to industrial applications.

 · Knowledge of human factors design concepts in automation design.

 · Bentley Software Promis.e preferred.

 · Working knowledge of industrial communication protocols including OPC, Modbus TCP/RTU, PROFINET, PROFIBUS and/or Ethernet/IP. null
