Job Summary

The Pharmacy Resident is a pharmacist in post-graduate training who provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care through coordination of drug distribution, clinical services and teaching. The resident provides care consistent with the services provided by other pharmacists at Beaumont Health. The intent of the residency program is to provide experience in the integration of pharmacy services with the comprehensive needs of individual practice settings and to provide in-depth experiences leading to advanced practice skills and knowledge. The resident will be supervised by a designated preceptor. The goal of the residency will be to develop high performing pharmacists who can conceptualize new and improved pharmacy services that benefit the health and well-being of the patient populations we serve.

Essential Functions

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities of a clinical pharmacist in both clinical and distribution assignments.

  • Fulfilling requirements for maintaining for residency accreditation, including maintaining documentation of residency-related activities.

  • Routinely participates in multidisciplinary rounds (when applicable) providing drug information, interventions and recommendations according to current evidence-based medication practices. Dissemination of drug information to physicians, nurses and other health care professions a well as patients.

  • Provides Pharmacokinetic dosing and Medication Management services to patients and documents interventions relating to both clinical and financial outcomes.

  • Serves as a role model/preceptor and is able to advise Pharmacy students consistent with academic credentials and clinical experience. Assists in the clinical development, training and education of students, pharmacist and new hires to the pharmacy department.

  • Develops and oversees the data collection and review of information gathered for drug utilization studies, quality improvement monitors, adverse drug event reporting, restricted drug policies and other processes as established by the department and hospital committees responsible for medication management and safety.

  • Proactively assesses prescribing patterns to promote the safe use of formulary medications by converting non-formulary medications when appropriate and helps coordinate the procurement of non-formulary medications when necessary.

  • Provides leadership in identifying and developing cost avoidance strategies in drug therapy, promoting more cost-effective treatment and reducing waste. Assists in decision-making process for formulary additions and deletions assuring processes are in place for safe administration, storage, distribution, preparation and use of medications.

  • Develops, conducts and documents clinical interventions and cost avoidance strategies as part of the departmental quality assurance and documentation program.

  • Assists in the coordination, development and assessment of departmental/hospital/system quality improvement activities. Assists in meeting hospital goals for core indicators relating to medication use.

  • Participates in the development of processes to assure investigational drugs are appropriately controlled, administered and properly destroyed when no longer needed.

  • Completing a project which requires formulating a question, creating a study design, conducting a literature search, conducting the actual study, analyzing and interpreting the study data, and presenting the results.

  • Participates in the development and production of patient education programs, in-service lectures and seminars and continuing education programs for pharmacy, nurses, physicians and other healthcare practitioners related to medication therapy. Assists in publication of department newsletter. Keeps abreast of current pharmaceutical innovations.

  • Fulfills staffing requirements by assisting with computer order entry and validation according to departmental policy. Ensures appropriate and accurate drug therapy by checking for drug interactions, incompatibilities, duplications, etc., during order entry and/or validation. Assists with preparation, formulation and distribution of medication providing efficient, quality and safe pharmaceutical services.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to professional growth by participating in education programs and professional organizations. Participates in the preparation and delivery of presentations to hospital committees, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, supportive personnel and other healthcare practitioners.

  • Enhances the patient’s experience by participating in programs and initiatives for Service, Quality and Safety.

Qualifications

  • Required Bachelor's Degree Pharmacy degree from an ACPE accredited program.

  • Experience gained through completion of a pharmacy degree program. Required

  • LIC-Clinical Pharmacist - STATE_MI State of Michigan 120 days required

  • LIC-Pharmacist Controlled Substance - STATE_MI State of Michigan 120 days required
