Engineer - Protection & Control

Reports to: Supervisor - Protection & Control - Philosophy and Standards
Reporting in office to Orange CT, Rochester NY, Augusta ME, Binghamton NY The base salary range for this position is dependent upon experience and location, ranging from $83,804.80- $104,756

Summary

The Philosophy and Standards group is a support function for the Protection and Control (P&C) Department. The Philosophy and Standards group is responsible for researching industry best practices to create P&C standards. This group also develops new engineering processes and tools. System scope includes transmission, substation, and distribution. Service companies include Central Maine Power, New York State Electric & Gas, Rochester Gas & Electric, and United Illuminating.

Responsibilities

General responsibilities include assisting in the development of P&C engineering standards, relay setting file templates, record keeping processes, and engineering tools. The engineer will also participate in the evaluation of new vendors and technologies.

The position requires conducting engineering analysis, researching white papers and manuals, presenting to technical and non-technical audiences, and documenting assignments. This position requires collaboration with other P&C engineers, other departments, contractors, and vendors.

Active projects include engineering a pilot IEC 61850 Process Bus Substation, evaluating Virtualized Protection Relays and Centralized Substation Protection, evaluating new relay vendors, updating engineering standards, upgrading the relay setting database, and writing conference papers.

Education and Experience

  • This is a second level engineer position (one level above entry level).
  • 2 years of experience in Power Systems Electrical Engineering (Protection and Control preferred) or 4 years of experience in Electrical Engineering.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • Due to the open-ended nature of the department's responsibilities, an intuitive understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals is required. This includes transformer basics, reactive power, power flow, electrical losses, and digital logic.
  • A strong understanding of Protection and Control fundamentals is preferred. This includes sequential components, per unit, and fault analysis
