Job Responsibilities/Duties

Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) is the tank farm operating contractor at the Hanford Site located in Richland, WA. The WRPS mission is to safely store, retrieve, and treat 53 million gallons of legacy radioactive and hazardous waste. This complex mission spans all competencies of engineering/science accomplished through a highly integrated engineering organization consisting of over 300 engineers. Hanford was established to produce the world's first atomic bomb in the Second World War and continued producing plutonium for the Cold War efforts from 1945 to 1991. Washington River Protection Solutions' mission is to safely handle the byproduct of this massive operation, and to ensure a clean environment for future generations.

This position supports the Tank Farms Projects (TFP) Engineering team and will work closely with other project engineers, project managers and internal/external agencies. The candidate should be a motivated engineer interested in joining a high performing team focused on project execution, worker safety and deploying innovative engineering solutions to handle Hanford's most challenging tasks.

This position will work closely with all groups within the TFP Engineering organization to gain an understanding of the different type of work performed by the team. This position will lead a small team of project engineers on large Tank Farm infrastructure projects.

Tasks include managing all engineering aspects of their assigned projects to include performing field walk downs, interfacing with craft/field crews, presenting to Department of Energy, developing ECNs, DCNs and Statement of Work (SOW) as well as working with various internal and external design A&E and fabrication vendors.

  • Act as a fully competent engineer in the functional and technical area of assignments. Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation or modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.

  • Complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories, and concepts in the field of engineering including a general knowledge of related disciplines.

  • Ensure company principles are incorporated into organization's activities and outputs.

  • Accountable for safety based on the principles of no injuries to anyone and continuous improvement.

  • Develop and sustain productive customer relationships.

  • Support preparation of Statements of Work, design products, procurements, specifications, etc.

  • Prepare and approve design media.

  • Prepare and approve Engineering documents, evaluations, and calculations.

  • Perform routine administrative activities/duties on time (routine training, safety meetings, Time Information System (TIS), continuing training, staff meetings).

The engineer will be expected to complete WRPS' Engineering Technical Staff, Project Engineer and Design Authority (DA) qualification.

Required Qualifications

Grade 17:

Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related technical degree

Five (5) years related experience

Grade 18:

Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related technical degree

Seven (7) years related experience

Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is larger, and the expected level of performance is increased.

  • Experience in the nuclear industry, preferably at Department of Energy (DOE) site.

  • Experience with AutoCAD.

Compensation & Benefits

Grade 17:

Hiring Range Minimum: $94,650

Hiring Range Maximum: $119,250

Grade 18:

Hiring Range Minimum: $104,175

Hiring Range Maximum: $131,425

In accordance with the company's philosophy on compensation for exempt and salaried non-exempt employees, WRPS takes into consideration a variety of factors when determining initial salary to include assigned job scope and responsibility, a candidate's qualifications as compared to internal comparators performing in a similar role, and the external labor market. A salary offer will be made within the targeted hiring range posted. Note a candidate's prior salary history will not be taken into consideration.
