Job Summary:

PAID TRAINING TO BECOME A MEDICAL ASSISTANT

The next Medical Assistant Program cohort is scheduled to start July 15, 2024. Those hired into the program will have a job as a Medical Assistant Trainee that pays them to complete a 12-week training program. Following the completion of the program requirements, the trainee will transfer to a Medical Assistant position within a VUMC clinic. MA Program graduates are expected to work at least one year in a full-time Medical Assistant role in a VUMC clinic. Medical Assistants must have and maintain a certification from one of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center approved MA programs within 120 days of employment.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Medical Assistant Program is a partnership between Nashville State Community College (NSCC) and Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in the Center for Programs in Allied Health. This program provides a unique opportunity for students to pursue a health career that is in high demand and provides the opportunity to work as a Medical Assistant at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Enrolled students complete a rigorous didactic curriculum at NSCC with courses in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, clinical procedures, and administrative management. Course work is reinforced through hands-on clinical application of content learned at VUMC medical clinics and under the supervision of clinical preceptors. Students gain skills in communications, taking vital signs, assisting with clinical examinations, and performing certain medical laboratory procedures.

PROGRAM CURRICULUM

• Pipeline to a career as a Medical Assistant at VUMC

• 12 weeks to completion

• 4 weeks classroom instruction at NSCC

• 8 weeks clinical experience various VUMC clinical departments

JOB SUMMARY

Supports the licensed healthcare team assisting with clinic flow through patient intake, assistance with office visits, exams, and procedures under the direct supervision of a Licensed nurse or certified medical assistant until program completion. May gather and document patient intake and screening data, assist with and reinforce patient and family education and communication with the health care team.

THIS MEDICAL ASSISTANT TRAINEE POSITION WILL PROVIDE PATIENT CARE FOR ADULT PATIENTS IN A VUMC CLINIC.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• The responsibilities listed are a general overview of the position and additional duties may be assigned.

• Directs and supports patient flow as well as unit operations by maintaining supplies, equipment and unit environmental standards.

• Facilitates identification of resources to meet patient healthcare needs.

• Performs/assists with procedures according to organizational/departmental standards.

• Collects and documents patient screening data for the healthcare team.

• Assists with patient and family education.

SHIFT: During the 12-week training program, trainees typically will work 32 hours per week Mon-Thurs 8a-4:30pm. After transferring to a VUMC clinic at the end of the program, hours may differ based on the clinic. Many clinics work 40 hours per week Mon-Fri.

• Clinical Patient Documentation (Fundamental Awareness): Has limited experience or training working with clinical applications for patient documentation.

• Environment of Care (Fundamental Awareness): Has limited experience or training working with set up and maintenance of patient exam rooms, supplies and equipment.

• Clinical Competencies (Fundamental Awareness): Demonstrates limited proficiency to assist and perform clinical care including but not limited to vital signs, phlebotomy, specimen collection, medication administration and point of care testing as directed by unit standards.
