Overview:

This position is part of the Jacobs Space Exploration Group (JSEG) support to the NASA EM32 Welding & Manufacturing (W&M) team under the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract to the NASA MSFC Engineering Directorate.

Responsibilities:

The position's primary responsibilities are to:

  1. Take an “ownership” stake in the customer’s fusion and friction stir welding equipment (industrial friction stir welding equipment, automated fusion welding equipment and positioners, and welding robots). The candidate will be expected to develop a deep understanding of how the equipment works to help maintain and modify the equipment.

  2. Help upgrade system documentation in the form of CAD drawings and written manuals. Some of the equipment was obtained as complete systems while other equipment was integrated from various commercial vendors along with custom parts. Wiring schematics and mechanical component drawings exist in a variety of formats and there is a need to transfer this data into new formats to maintain configuration control.

  3. Help develop new automated mechanical systems and configure data acquisition systems for welding development experiments.

  4. Help maintain legacy control systems as well as helping upgrade them to LabVIEW-based programming and compatible hardware so the equipment can continue to meet IT Security requirements (i.e. use current/approved Windows versions).

  5. Coordinate and interface with customer and vendor calibration services and follow up with resulting actions.

  6. Coordinate and interface with equipment vendors when they plan and execute equipment repairs and upgrades.

  7. Help other EM32 W&M Team customers understand and resolve problems related to their welding manufacturing process equipment.

The selected candidate serves as a fully competent engineer or scientist in all conventional aspects of the subject matter or the functional area of the assignments. Applies intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering/scientific principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields. Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria. Devises new approaches to satisfy unusual or specialized requirements. The selected candidate is capable of representing the organization at technical meetings and conferences and may guide or be assisted by engineers/scientists or technicians.

Here’s what you’ll need :

· Qualifications:

  1. BS degree in Electrical, Electronics, Industrial Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited university is required. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a minimum of a BS with at least 5 years’ experience or an MS with at least 3 years’ experience.

  2. The selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain permission to operate customer-owned vehicles in support of work activities. The selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver's license, automobile liability insurance and successfully complete a company defensive driving training class.

Relevant candidate work experience will be evaluated against ESSCA contract engineering labor categories.

The selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain the following customer safety certifications:

  1. Electrical Worker.

  2. Lockout/Tagout Authorized.

  3. Aerial Lifts (boom-supported and vertical).

  4. Fall Protection (for aerial lift work).

  5. Welding Safety.

The selected candidate must have demonstrated experience developing and/or understanding industrial electrical controls schematics and programming logic. The selected candidate must be able to work hands-on with machine tool-like equipment involving electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic and mechanical components and systems. Previous experience with commercial automated welding equipment (e.g. AMET or AMI) and FANUC robots is strongly desired, but not required.”

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Office and laboratory environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).

Physical Requirements

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
