Background & Purpose of the Job

Microbiology R&D Scientist role supporting R&D Product Development to deliver microbiological product safety by design, and to deploy microbiological food safety into production operations, packaging, storage, handling and consumer end use. The position is suitable for an experienced individual who can perform in a demanding environment, typical of a fast-paced large consumer and packaged goods company. The role requires ability to work independently, supporting R&D product developers, supply chain QA, and providing expertise in food safety, product and process validations, factory hygiene and sanitation, and FDA FSMA Preventative Controls. Must have Masters’ Degree in Microbiology, with minimum 5 years post-graduate experience. Specific experience working in a food R&D microbiology environment with strong laboratory skills; Strong familiarity with HACCP and an FDA Qualified Individual with training in new FDA FSMA Preventative Controls Programs, Product and Process microbiological validations. Additional and significant job-related training will be provided, and then the role is performed with very limited supervision. Excellent communication and presentation skills with proficiency in writing technical reports. Strong integrity and ability to manage challenges under pressure. Very strong organizational skills are needed to manage a diverse set of activities and to coordinate numerous testing studies, while working on various R&D projects and supporting factory quality assurance teams.

Who You Are & What You’ll Do

This is a Microbiology R&D primary lead role that will be relied upon for providing guidance and expertise to Product and Process Development Teams and Factory QA personnel. Job Responsibilities mostly include product formulation safety assessments; providing expertise and guidance to ensure microbiological safety by design; critical specifications; directing and/or conducting microbiological challenge tests and shelf life studies; hands-on operation of basic microbiological lab activities; direct expert guidance to Quality Assurance and factory personnel; and microbiological commissioning of new products and lines in factories. The work may include basic microbiology lab functions, as well as, a liaison directing 3rd Party Laboratory activities. Ensuring Good Laboratory Practices and adequate controls and verifications; ensuring microbiology tests are conducted proficiently and safely, including working with food-borne pathogens. Providing expertise to factory QA to assist in risk management, microbiological control programs, and evaluation of deviations. Role is approx. 50% Laboratory based; 30% R&D support; approx. 20% Supply Chain Factory support; and involves travel 15-20% to support factory activities, such as, new product deployment, evaluating 3rd Party manufacturing sites, line commissioning, and providing training.

What You’ll Need To Succeed

  • Must have Masters Degree in Microbiology, with minimum 5 years experience in Microbiology, and specific experience working in a food R&D microbiology environment with good laboratory skills

  • Bachelor Degree in Biology may be considered if greater than 10 years related experience in foods and microbiology.

  • Strong familiarity with Laboratory GLPs, HACCP, and FDA Qualified Individual with training in new FDA FSMA Preventative Controls Programs, Product and Process microbiological validations.

  • Additional and significant job-related training will be provided, and then the role is performed with very limited supervision, in an independent company environment.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with proficiency in writing technical reports.

  • Strong integrity and ability to manage challenges under pressure.

  • Very strong organizational skills are needed to manage a diverse set of activities and to coordinate numerous testing studies, while working on various R&D projects and supporting factory quality assurance teams.
