Unilever Process Engineer in Covington, Tennessee

Background & Purpose of the Job

The Process Engineer / Senior Process Engineer will manage the end to end delivery of technology and site capital projects for our Ice Cream manufacturing facility in Covington, TN, near Memphis. The projects will be mainly to support new technology ice cream projects but will entail a wide range of focuses including processing & packaging equipment, control & automation, utilities, safety, quality, infrastructure, savings, and equipment improvements. The person will also drive the site masterplan for Covington plant, align with the Unilever design teams and provide technical support to the day to day and reliability activities. This role reports to the Engineering Manager responsible for Klondike, Popsicle, Good Humor and Ben & Jerry Slices ice cream technologies. The level of responsibilities, and Process Engineer or Senior Process Engineer role will depend on candidate’s profile and relevant experience.

Who You Are & What You'll Do

Organized and detail oriented to deliver projects respective safety, product quality, project timing, and cost. You will be supported by full-time and hired contractors to execute the projects. The Process Engineer takes a leadership role over a portion of the capital project portfolio in the site.

  • You're a born leader : Management of new / improvement projects in a fast-moving environment with many stakeholders (factory, R&D, engineering, planning, brand teams etc.) requires the ability for independent decision making, constructive collaboration, managing expectations, and navigating tradeoffs for our customers. The position is responsible for cost estimating, analyzing options, building business cases, critiquing designs, managing construction, installation, commissioning, and handover with minimal supervision. As a member of management in a factory, you will be expected to lead other activities in our safety, quality, and continuous improvement programs. You are the site expert on food processing, batching, and energy and utilities management.

  • You're a change maker : Leads the standardization and development of the plant masterplan for process, grounds, and utilities. Technical resource to the category engineering team for new products and re-stages (innovation and renovation), and a resource for factory continuous improvement programs.

  • You're a dot connector : Participates in cross-plant improvement teams. Develop strong partnership with plant manufacturing, continuous improvement, corporate engineering and union workforce. Supports root cause analysis on process and utilities issues.

What You'll Need to Succeed:


  • Education : BS in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Food Engineering, or other related engineering degree.

  • Experience : Experience: 5+ Years of Project Engineering in FMCG, food or related Industry or gained in an engineering consultancy environment.

  • Project Management, maintenance, or continuous improvement experience with food processing and/or utilities systems.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; along with the ability to negotiate.


  • First-hand experience delivering major capital projects ($2+ million) in a FMCG or food manufacturing environment.

  • Knowledge of GMP and sanitary / hygienic design fundamentals.

  • Understanding of process controls & automation programming, robots / cobots, and digital factory concepts.

  • Six sigma, TPM, WCM and data analytics.
