Unilever Scientist, Consumer Science - Seventh Generation in Burlington, Vermont


The Scientist, Consumer Science works collaboratively across functions and product groups to support all aspects of product development to ensure product safety and authenticity to meet the rigorous Seventh Generation standards.

In addition, they are responsible for generating technical insights inputting to the development process for products; conducts consumer research to support product development and strategic initiatives and provides up to date competitive intelligence across categories. This role will across all the homecare product categories in North America.


Consumer Safety testing

  • Execute third party testing including but not limited to study design, coordination with labs, analysis, and reporting to generate performance, safety, authenticity, and environmental data for claims support and product qualification.
  • Work closely with formulation chemists, packaging engineers, and regulatory affairs on innovation, renovation, cost saving projects, ensuring that consumer safety requirements are incorporated as part of the product development process
  • Use company consumer safety screening tools to assess products for safety
  • Coordinate data requests from internal and external stakeholders and provide reports, presentations, and other materials as required.
  • Create, document, and implement standard operating processes and procedures owned by Consumer Science team.
  • Lead or contribute to special projects as required.

Consumer Testing Research Coordination

  • Lead consumer product testing across categories including but not limited to test design, recruitment, data collection, sample management, analysis, reporting and logistics
  • Liaise with external partners and expert to design, deliver, interpret and communicate on consumer tests required to support the product development process
  • Act as a subject matter expert for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead or contribute to special projects as required.

Knowledge Management

  • Lead documentation management for the projects but not limited to procuring raw material documentation, creating and maintaining product data libraries
  • Create, document, and implement processes and procedures for Consumer Science.

Competitive Intelligence

  • Execute competitive intelligence research including but not limited to working with marketing/sales to determine key competitors, designing and executing research studies to measure competitive product attributes, creating product demonstrations and reports for sales & marketing, and creating searchable databases/libraries of competitive data.
  • Conduct regular market assessments of claims in key and adjacent categories to deliver: competitive landscape assessments, historical catalog of claims of key competitors, emerging trends, competitive advantages/disadvantages
  • Act as a subject matter expert for internal and external stakeholders.


  • Lead the qualification process for new product development, working cross functionally to ensure that all the technical elements of the product are delivered together and meet the product action standards prior to release for manufacture.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Science, Physical Science, or related discipline.
  • Related experience (3 years) in R&D, preferably in consumer-packaged goods, homecare.
  • Strong verbal and written skills with intense attention to detail.
  • Experience in managing logistically complex projects and large volumes of data.
  • Ability to conduct research and clearly and concisely report results.
  • Able to coordinate the needs of multiple functional areas simultaneously.
  • Able to prioritize and meet deadlines within specified time constraints.
  • Capacity to flourish in an environment of rapid change and high ambiguity.
  • Self-motivated with an enhanced ability to work independently.
  • Desire to work in a small, entrepreneurial environment and for a socially responsible business.
  • Strong computer skills, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Proficiency with Product Vision, electronic notebook would be a plus.
  • Willingness to continually embrace personal and professional development.
